AIPMT - All You Need to Know

What is AIPMT?

All India Pre Medical Test (or popularly known as AIPMT) is a Medical College Entrance Examination held in India on a yearly basis. Conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi, the AIPMT serves the purpose of admission in BDS and MBBS courses in various Dental and Medical Colleges all over India. Reservations: Till 2005, the AIPMT was amongst one of the few Entrance Examinations in India that selected candidates solely on the basis of merit. Since 2006, reservations for ST, SC and OBC have been introduced with 15% seats reserved for SC candidates, 7.5% for ST candidates and 27% seats reserved for OBC candidates. 3% seats are reserved for Physically Handicapped candidates on horizontal basis. Pattern of Exam: Usually held on the first week of May, the AIPMT is conducted in one stage which consists of 180 objective type questions set from all three subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology). Marks Distribution: AIPMT exam paper contains 180 objective type questions with each question carrying around 4 marks. From the total of 180 questions, 45 questions are of Physics, 45 questions are of Chemistry and 90 questions are of Biology having 45 each for Zoology and Botany. There is negative marking and each wrong answer will result in deduction of one mark from the total score. Leaving a question unanswered will not account for deduction of marks, but however, selecting more than one answer for a question will account for deduction of one mark from the total score. The exam duration is of 3 hours. Changes in Pattern of Exam: The AIPMT has been subjected to various changes since 2010 and was also replaced with National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) at one point of time. It was however later restored along with removal of two stage format of the examination. Seats: Governed by the regulations set by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India, the AIPMT is conducted for 15% of merit positions of Medical and Dental colleges of India. Approximately around 2500 MBBS seats and 400 Dental seats are available in various Medical and Dental colleges through AIPMT. Eligibility Criteria: Candidates appearing in AIPMT should have a minimum age of 17 years during the time of admission and must be Indian nationals. The upper age limit for appearing in AIPMT is 25 years which is relaxed by 5 years for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. General candidates are required to have passed Physics, Chemistry, Biology as well as English subjects individually and are also required to have scored a minimum of 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in the board exam. For candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, the minimum marks is around 40% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together. For candidates with locomotory disability of lower limbs the eligibility criteria is a minimum of 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together. Each candidate gets a maximum number of three opportunities to appear in AIPMT.
