Mathematics NCERT Grade 10, Chapter 7: Coordinate geometry - In the beginning, a short description of different coordinates are given with reference to what students have already learned in class IX. 
  • The distance of a point from the y-axis is called its y-coordinate or abscissa.  
  • The distance of a point from the x-axis is called its x-coordinate or ordinate.  
This chapter lays emphasis on the following points:
  • How to find the distance between the two points whose coordinates are given
  • To find the area of the triangles formed by three given points.
  • How to find the coordinates of the points which divide a line segment joining two given points in a given ratio. 
In the first section, readers will learn about the distance formula. Distance formula is well explained with the help of diagrams followed by important points to be noted at the end. Solved examples are given to make the concept more understandable to students. Different variety of questions are given in the first exercise i.e 7.1 from the topic distance formula.
Moving further, section formula is given and a special case called the mid-point formula is also explained which is important from the examination point of view.
  • In this special case, it is discussed what happens when the mid point of a line segment divides the line segment in the ratio 1 : 1. An exercise of 10 questions is given after the explanation of the section formula.
  • In the last section, the area of a triangle is discussed.   
5 solved examples are given. Students must go through the solved examples before solving exercise 7.3. In this exercise, students have to mainly find the area of triangles and quadrilaterals whose vertices are given. An optional exercise is given which is not from the examination point of view. After that, the chapter is concluded in 5 points for a quick revision.
